Our Support Group

Our Story
Our journey began in 2022, when we recognised the urgent need for dedicated support and resources for individuals living with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND). What started as a small support group quickly grew into a vital community. The idea took root when Audrey Bart, a medical technologist with a passion for learning, began searching for resources during her own healing journey with FND.
Drawing from her medical background, Audrey delved into extensive research - studying books, academic papers, and various FND and mental health resources. This pursuit of knowledge led her to establish FND – What Now?, a support group launched in November 2022 with the assistance of the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG).
Founded in 1994, SADAG is a non-profit organisation and registered Section 21 company. Its board includes psychiatrists, psychologists, general practitioners, and patients, all working together to support thousands of South Africans living with mental health conditions. SADAG is committed to eliminating stigma and discrimination in mental health, while providing education, advocacy, and resources to patients and their families. The organisation coordinates a network of over 180 support groups across South Africa (SA).
FND – What Now? was created to bridge the gap between professional medical treatment and long-term support. While medical care and therapy are essential, many individuals need ongoing encouragement, guidance, and a sense of connection as they navigate life with FND. Our support group provides this much-needed aftercare - ensuring that no one faces their journey alone.
